Robert H. Frank: The Darwin Economy : Liberty, Competition, and the Common Good

The Darwin Economy : Liberty, Competition, and the Common Good

Description

Who was the greater economist--Adam Smith or Charles Darwin? The question seems absurd. Darwin, after all, was a naturalist, not an economist. But Robert Frank, New York Times economics columnist and best-selling author of The Economic Naturalist, predicts that within the next century Darwin will unseat Smith as the intellectual founder of economics. The reason, Frank argues, is that Darwin's understanding of competition describes economic reality far more accurately than Smith's. And the consequences of this fact are profound. Indeed, the failure to recognize that we live in Darwin's world rather than Smith's is putting us all at risk by preventing us from seeing that competition alone will not solve our problems. Smith's theory of the invisible hand, which says that competition channels self-interest for the common good, is probably the most widely cited argument today in favor of unbridled competition--and against regulation, taxation, and even government itself. But what if Smith's idea was almost an exception to the general rule of competition? That's what Frank argues, resting his case on Darwin's insight that individual and group interests often diverge sharply. Far from creating a perfect world, economic competition often leads to "arms races," encouraging behaviors that not only cause enormous harm to the group but also provide no lasting advantages for individuals, since any gains tend to be relative and mutually offsetting. The good news is that we have the ability to tame the Darwin economy. The best solution is not to prohibit harmful behaviors but to tax them. By doing so, we could make the economic pie larger, eliminate government debt, and provide better public services, all without requiring painful sacrifices from anyone. That's a bold claim, Frank concedes, but it follows directly from logic and evidence that most people already accept. In a new afterword, Frank further explores how the themes of inequality and competition are driving today's public debate on how much government we need.

From her tumultuous early years as a child performer to her tragic last days, Gerald The Darwin Economy : Liberty, Competition, and the Common Good download book Clarke reveals the authentic Judy in a biography rich in new detail and unprecedented revelations. Terry Smith: Talking Contemporary Curating

Talking Contemporary Curating

Description

Since the publication of "Thinking Contemporary Curating" in 2012, art historian Terry Smith has continued his travels through the globalizing art world, talking to curators. The dozen searching conversations in this book--with Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Claire Bishop, Zdenka Badovinac, Mami Kataoka, Mari Carmen Ramírez, Okwui Enwezor, Germano Celant, Jens Hoffmann, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Maria Lind, Zoe Butt and Boris Groys--provide a vivid sense of contemporary curatorial thought at work. They show curators deeply immersed in thinking about the exigencies of practice, the contexts of exhibition-making, the platforms through which art may be made public, and about what their work can contribute toward understanding what it means to be alive today.Terry Smith is Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory in the Department of the History of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh. In 2010 he was named Australia Council Visual Arts Laureate by the Australian Government, and won the Mather Award for art criticism conferred by the College Art Association (USA). He is the author of "Making the Modern: Industry, Art and Design in America" (University of Chicago Press, 1993); "The Architecture of Aftermath" (University of Chicago Press, 2006), "What is Contemporary Art?" (University of Chicago Press, 2009), "Contemporary Art: World Currents" (Laurence King and Pearson/Prentice-Hall, 2011) and "Thinking Contemporary Curating" (Independent Curators International, 2012).

But troubles never come singly for Kilo-Five. Colonial terrorism is once again surfacing on one of the worlds that survived the war against the Covenant, and the man behind it is much more than just a name to Spartan-010. Food is Medicine: Volume One

Description

Tens of thousands of scientific studies have been performed worldwide affirming the fundamental role that unprocessed, unheated plant-based food plays in the process of disease recovery and prevention. Food IS Medicine is a three-volume series presenting noteworthy and provocative data from studies clearly demonstrating that the most important ingested medicine comes from the food we consume. The key finding of each study is summarized in accessible language for both the layperson or consummate culinary or nutrition professional. The studies are then presented chronologically, so the reader can grasp the evolution of findings and theories about the health impacts of various nutrients and foods. Volume One comprises five chapters covering the following topics: (1) phytochemicals in food and their health-creating properties, (2) the importance of nutrient synergies to human health, (3) the nutrient superiority of organic fruits and vegetables compared to nonorganic produce, (4) the health benefits of calorie-restrictive diets and fasting, and (5) the nutrient retention and health benefits of raw foods compared to cooked or unprocessed foods.

Sherard Cowper-Coles: Ever the Diplomat: Confessions of a Foreign Office Mandarin

Ever the Diplomat: Confessions of a Foreign Office Mandarin

Description

In this entertaining and engaging memoir, former ambassador Sherard Cowper-Coles lifts the lid on embassy life throughout the world. In 1977 fresh-faced Oxford graduate Sherard Cowper-Coles entered the hallowed portals of the Foreign Office. Over the next thirty years he was invariably to be found at the frontline of international diplomacy, either striding the corridors of power at Westminster or jetting from one exotic location to the next. His tasks ranged from the challenging to the bizarre - from speech writing for Margaret Thatcher (who scrawled an emphatic 'NO!' over his first effort), to hiding an embarrassing bobble hat from Robin Cook . With recollections from the last three decades in international politics, taking us right up to Cowper-Coles's posting to Afghanistan, 'Ever the Diplomat' is a revealing and witty account of a unique period in our history. Cowper-Coles reveals what went on behind-the-scenes of Whitehall as we encounter a swindler impersonating Liberian President Charles Taylor, the young, idealistic leader of Syria Bashar al-Assad and Tony Blair in his boxer shorts.

Chaim Potok: The Chosen

The Chosen

Description

In 1940s Brooklyn, two boys who have grown up within a few blocks of each other, but in entirely different worlds, meet for the first time in a bizarre encounter -- a baseball game between two Jewish parochial schools that turns into a holy war. With dramatic force and simplicity that seizes the heart, "The Chosen" depicts the powerful bonds of love and pain that join father and son, the communions and quarrels of friendship, the true religionist's love of God, and the tumults by which the heart is made human.

Wicked intrigue unfolds in "New York Times" bestselling author Julia London's latest historical gem as an unlikely marriage leads to a path of risky desire in the lush, emerald Highlands At the same time, by showing how we can all use such cleverly devised strategies as the 'Velcro Theory of Memory' and 'curiosity gaps', it offers superbly practical insights, setting out principles we all can adopt to make sure that we get our ideas across effectively. The Scavenger species are circling. It is, truly, the End Days for The Chosen download ebook the Gzilt civilization. An ancient people, organized on military principles and yet almost perversely peaceful, the Gzilt helped set up the Culture ten thousand years earlier and were very nearly one of its founding societies, deciding not to join only at the last moment. Now they've made the collective decision to follow the well-trodden path of millions of other civilizations; they are going to Sublime, elevating themselves to a new and almost infinitely more rich and complex existence. Amid preparations though, the Regimental High Command is destroyed. Lieutenant Commander (reserve) Vyr Cossont appears to have been involved, and she is now wanted - dead, not alive. Aided only by an ancient, reconditioned android and a suspicious Culture avatar, Cossont must complete her last mission given to her by the High Command. She must find the oldest person in the Culture, a man over nine thousand years old, who might have some idea what really happened all that time ago. It seems that the final days of the Gzilt civilization are likely to prove its most perilous.

Affluence and Influence: Economic Inequality and Political Power in America download pdf

Martin Gilens: Affluence and Influence: Economic Inequality and Political Power in America

Affluence and Influence: Economic Inequality and Political Power in America

Description

Can a country be a democracy if its government only responds to the preferences of the rich? In an ideal democracy, all citizens should have equal influence on government policy--but as this book demonstrates, America's policymakers respond almost exclusively to the preferences of the economically advantaged. Affluence and Influence definitively explores how political inequality in the United States has evolved over the last several decades and how this growing disparity has been shaped by interest groups, parties, and elections. With sharp analysis and an impressive range of data, Martin Gilens looks at thousands of proposed policy changes, and the degree of support for each among poor, middle-class, and affluent Americans. His findings are staggering: when preferences of low- or middle-income Americans diverge from those of the affluent, there is virtually no relationship between policy outcomes and the desires of less advantaged groups. In contrast, affluent Americans' preferences exhibit a substantial relationship with policy outcomes whether their preferences are shared by lower-income groups or not. Gilens shows that representational inequality is spread widely across different policy domains and time periods. Yet Gilens also shows that under specific circumstances the preferences of the middle class and, to a lesser extent, the poor, do seem to matter. In particular, impending elections--especially presidential elections--and an even partisan division in Congress mitigate representational inequality and boost responsiveness to the preferences of the broader public. At a time when economic and political inequality in the United States only continues to rise, Affluence and Influence raises important questions about whether American democracy is truly responding to the needs of all its citizens.
